Who can borrow materials?
Patrons who have either a current Vassar College identification card or a current Special Borrowers card may borrow art library materials. Circulation privileges for all members of the Vassar community are administered through the Main Library Circulation Office, where identification cards are validated. Special Borrowers should apply for circulation privileges at the Reference Desk in the Main Library. Temporary cards are issued at the Main Library Circulation Desk for patrons who have lost their identification.
What may circulate?
Whether and how long an item may circulate is tabulated on a formula based on the kind of material presented (monograph, periodical, etc.) and the type of borrower (student, faculty, staff, special borrower, etc.). In general, bound and current periodicals, reference books, and books in classed-together series do not circulate to students and special borrowers. Main Library books may be circulated from the Art Library, and Art Library books may be circulated from the Main Library, except for books on reserve.
Loan Periods
- Faculty may borrow books for the academic year, except for periodicals, which are due three days from the date of circulation.
- Students and special borrowers may borrow books on regular loan for a period of 30 days from the date of circulation.
- Seniors writing art theses may circulate materials to the end of the semester. Other seniors may take Art Library materials for 30 days only.
- Reserve Materials circulate for a period of three to four hours, or overnight if circulated one hour before closing.
Art Library Overdues, Fines, and Replacement Fees:
Art Library fines for overdue material follow the guidelines issued by the Main Library with the following exceptions:
$5.00 per hour per item/$75.00 per day per item is assessed for overdue Art Reserve materials during Final Examination Week.
$2.00 may be assessed for a lost blue reserve card.
The Art Library Reference Collection is located on the entry level of the library and extends between the door of the Librarian's Office to the microfilm cabinets behind the catalog table. Thomas Hill, the Art Librarian, is generally available between 8:30 and 5:00 p.m. weekdays for walk-in reference assistance. He is also available for in-depth research consulations, which are best made by appointment. He can be reached at x5791, or at thhill@vassar.edu.

Books and other materials are placed on reserve to insure that all students taking a course have equal access to items essential to that course. The Reserve List for a given course can be accessed through the Menu Option "R" on the main screen of the library catalog.
Types of Art Library Reserve
DESK RESERVE: Books, photocopied articles, Photo-CDs, and other materials on desk reserve for all courses are kept behind the circulation desk. All books on desk reserve must be charged out to be used, and most may be taken out of the library for the period of circulation. Materials on desk reserve generally contain required reading, and are marked "Art Desk" in the location area of the call number in the library catalog.
BROWSING RESERVE: Each Art Department course has a designated shelf or table in the Art Library where books and study photographs are gathered for student perusal. Books on Art Library browsing reserve are marked "Art Reserve" in the location area of the call number in the library catalog. Books on Browsing Reserve may be circulated out of the library.

Interlibrary loan materials may be requested via Connect New York or submitting an ILL request online via ILLiad.

Carrels on the stack levels of the Art Library may be signed out to Art Department majors writing senior theses. Books may be circulated to these carrels.

Microfilm and microfiche readers are available in the Art Library Visual Resources room.

A VCR & monitor is located on the Meeker Visual Resources Room of the Library for viewing videos placed on Art Reserve. Headphones are available at the Art Library Circulation Desk.

A photocopy machine is located on the entry level of the library, and may be operated coin or with a copy card, which can be purchased at the Main Library circulation desk.

The Art Librarian is available to provide instructional sessions in art historical research and methodology to classes whose faculty request this service. In addition, evening instructional workshops are given each term to art majors preparing their senior theses.

All requests for new materials for the Art Library should be made in writing to the Art Librarian. This may be done via email to thhill@vassar.edu. Students writing papers are encouraged to submit requests for material specific to their research early in the term.

Books and periodicals from the Art Library collections that are marked "Available" in the library catalog but which are not in their proper places on the shelf will be searched upon request. Search Forms are available at the Art Library circulation desk for this purpose. Searches are conducted each week-day, generally in the afternoon. Books that have been found are held at the Art Library circulation desk, and the patron notified of this by mail.
