Secrets of Easter Island

"This is the story of a team of archaeologists and a 75-person crew who sought to unravel a central mystery of Easter Island: how hundreds of giant stone statues that dominate the island's coast were moved and erected. For one month, the team struggled to raise a 10-ton moai, using only the tools and materials available to the ancient Easter Islanders."

Themed around an expedition that took place April-May 1998, "Secrets of Easter Island" provides a fascinating interactive look into the history, culture, and mysteries of Rapa Nui (a.k.a. Easter Island) and the hundreds of massive stone megaliths that scatter it. The site focuses on questions that have baffled western scholars and researchers for centuries regarding why the statues (some of which weigh in at up to 82 tons) were built and how they were transported across the island using only stone, wood, rope, and human power. Visitors to the site are encouraged to develop and send in their own thoughts and theories.
